To become a nurse assistant (also known as a certified nursing assistant or CNA) in the state of California, you will need to complete the following steps:
- Complete a state-approved nursing assistant training program. These programs typically take around four to six weeks to complete and include both classroom instruction and hands-on training.
- Pass a state competency exam, which will test your knowledge of nursing assistant duties and procedures, as well as your ability to perform basic nursing skills.
- Register with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) as a nursing assistant. This will require you to submit proof of your training and passing exam scores, as well as pay a fee.
- Once you are registered with the CDPH, you will need to renew your certification every two years by completing continuing education and paying a renewal fee.
It’s important to note that there are some employers that may require additional certifications, such as CPR certification or a background check.
