What is the job description for Medical Assistant?

A medical assistant is a healthcare professional who performs administrative and clinical tasks under the supervision of a physician or other licensed healthcare practitioner. The job description for a medical assistant may vary depending on the setting in which they work, but some common responsibilities include:

Administrative tasks:

  • Answering telephones and scheduling appointments
  • Greeting patients and taking medical histories
  • Recording vital signs, such as blood pressure and weight
  • Preparing patients for medical exams
  • Assisting with medical billing and coding
  • Maintaining patient records and filing paperwork
  • Ordering and maintaining medical supplies and equipment

Clinical tasks:

  • Collecting and processing laboratory specimens, such as blood and urine samples
  • Performing basic laboratory tests, such as EKGs and urinalysis
  • Administering medications and injections as directed by a physician
  • Removing sutures and changing dressings
  • Educating patients about medications and self-care procedures
  • Sterilizing and preparing medical instruments
  • Providing support during medical procedures, such as biopsies and minor surgeries

In addition to these tasks, medical assistants may also be responsible for providing basic patient care and assisting with medical emergencies. They must have strong communication and interpersonal skills, as they will be working closely with patients and healthcare providers. They must also be knowledgeable about medical terminology, procedures, and basic pharmacology.
